Emily Murphy was born in Cookstone, Ontario on March 14th 1868. She was born into the politicaly involved family the Ferguson's, but later married into the Murphy family. She was the third child of six. She had grown up with her father Isaac, Uncle, all of her brothers, as well as her grandfather. The Ferguson's were highly involved in politics. As most of her family conversations had to do with this topic, she became intrested in womans rights and other political topics at a very early age.
Later at age 19 she married a man named Arthur Murphy. She lived with him and her two daughters Kathleen, and Evelyn. She had married at age 19. Due to her being a female, she was forced to change her name from Ferguson to Murphy. Emily had actually given birth to four children, but two passed away. All four of the children in order from first to last where Madeleine, Evelyn, Doris and Kathleen. Doris died young of dipthria and Madeline died at nine months because she was prematurely born. ''I had many devistations in my life, many let downs too, but the day that Doris died my whole life dropped. The minute that she had died she was in my arms, I held her for her last breath, and I felt I had given up. But later when I had Kathleen it motivated me to keep going.'' Emily stated these words on Kathleen's first birthday.
One of the biggest reasons that Emily became more intrested in womans rights and decided to get involved was due to the fact that her husband sold their farm without even asking her.
By the age 35, her and Arthur had moved to Alberta, and that is where she began to become involved in womans rights campaigns. Throughout her life she was able to accomplish becoming a writer, journalist, magistrate, as well as a political and legal reformer.
